This site has Unicode encoded Bengali texts. If you cannot see the Bangla texts, then you would need to setup your computer for Unicode. Here is how to setup. You may also need to install a good Bangla Unicode font. We have modified the  publicly available Ekushey Lohit font for better screen reading. The new font, called AponaLohit looks almost like an Unicode compatible version of popular Boishakhi font. Download from here. You may wish to view the Bangla version of this site too.

Introducing Joomla
A Practical Approach

A Practical Approach:

To build a Bangla website based on Joomla you would need Joomla software and a few Extensions. A local or remote web server is definitely required as basic.

 1. Joomla
Download and install latest version of Joomla from the forge site. You may prefer to download the Bangla (BD) localised version from download section of this website. After downloading you need to install Joomla. Here is an excellent step by step tutorial on Joomla installation. If you download the Joomla from forge, you should consider downloading the Bangla (BD) language pack from this site that would a lot of messages in Bangla. Unzip the package and put those files in the language folder of Joomla installation.

2. Joomfish
Joomfish is the multilingual component for Joomla. It allows you create the user interface and contents in more than one languages. The visitors can select the language of of their preference or you may show the appropriate version depending on the location. Download the component from forge or from here. Install the component by logging in to the admin backend and selecting Installers -> Components and then selecting the file from your local computer. You may need to set certain folder permissions to 777 for properly installing Joomfish.

3. JCE
Once you are finished with installing Joomla, you get your website ready. You then need to add/edit contents and show them in proper way using a template of your choice. There is no limit on template or kind of sites that Joomla cant run. To add/edit content you need to login in the backend or in the frontpage (when you have the right permissions to add/edit contents). Joomla provides a WYSIWYG editor called TinyMCE by default. But there is a better one called JCE. JCE can be downloaded form the developer's web site or from here. Be sure to download the latest version and any available patch. JCE itself has extra plugins for bonus features. You may find them in the JCE's website.

4. SEFx

You develop your site for other people. Visitors find your site via search engine. Desiging a site that is friendly for a search engine is itself a professional field. SEFx is a search engine friendly (SEF)component that converts the URLs in a convenient format for search engine. Only SEFx (now renamed as JoomSEF) works with multilingual content such as Bangla. So installing SEFx is recommended.

Translating contents:

Any contents you add to your site needs to be manually translated into the langauges you want. Joomfish manages the translation, but it is the users who have to do the job. Nice thing is users with certain rights can do the translation or submit new contents from the front page. There is a little post on the Bangla Joomla forum that may help on how to do the translation

Securing your site:

This is often overlooked but should be the most important aspect of a site. A secure website needs support from the server it runs on, the file and folder permissions of Joomla installation. For up to date information, the security forum should be a regular place to pop in. In brief, the server must have PHP's register global off and apache running as limited user. Your Joomla site should have no file permissions set to 666 or 777 that would allow anyone to write in it. Most of the hackings were for this reason. The configuration file itself needs to be set to 664 when making any changes to the configuration, but once that is done, set it back to 644. For installing a component a number of folder need to be 777. Unless your users are expected to upload or share any files, set them to 755. And above all, keep regular backup of your site.
