Introducing Joomla:
Joomla is free Open Source CMS software written in PHP under the auspices of Open Source Matters foundation. Initially sprung off from Mambo (another Open Source CMS) Joomla has now become very popular due its abundant collection of Extensions. Extensions are add-ons into basic Joomla to further its feature for a specific kind of need.
Joomla.org site and sub-sites (including the forum) are the ultimate resource for information on Joomla. Here is a sneak snapshot of its features:
- Database driven- so all text contents are stored in a database. This is useful for archiving and easy transfer of site from one host to another. It Suppprts MySQL and PgSQL
- Contents are classified into Sections with built-in support for Standard Sections like news, blogs, RSS feeds etc.
- Sections can have categories
- Sections, categories, contents etc can be added to by contributing authors.
- Text contents are editable by inline WYSIWYG editor, much like Word.
- Site template or theme is fully customisable. This makes Joomla suitable for any kind of site. A set of standard templates are supplied with hundred more available for free on the Internet.
- Images and other kinds of media contents are uploaded by Browser or FTP for use anywhere in the site. They can also be organised into Library for easy management. There are Extensions that allow full control on the upload and manipulation of media contents from within Joomla.
